The Yellow Train school, India

Inspiring story of a school in India!
The Circle India Team kicked off our mid-year stepback with a day immersed inside of the Yellow Train school. This innovative institution, sitting in the heart of Coimbatore, was built thirteen years ago. Their story is both inspiring and unique. They looked, first, to the story of Toto Chan - a Japanese educator who led a small group of students through the calamities of World War II. He converted an old train buggy where his students would study, every single day. And amidst the bombings and deaths, he created an oasis for students to learn, explore nature, read, and experience childhoods the best they possibly could.

As you walk through the halls of Yellow Train, you can feel that oasis. Students share this campus with more than 100 animals. They learn through the rigorous but empowering Waldorf Curriculum. They start every morning with music and movement. And student after student, through repeated interviews, spoke of one thing that defined their school: teachers who cared deeply about them and surrounded them with love.

What was most incredible was the alignment we saw between teachers and students.

Adults, every single morning, start their days by singing themselves. They hold spaces of affirmation to ground and hold each other, before spending the day holding children.

How different would our schools be if we all started off each day like that?
