Last week I got to play chess against a 5 year old, we played 3 games, I played my best game and was (surprisingly) fully concentrated and was very impressed with the skills and attention of my opponent
It sparked fresh inspiration and motivation in me to look at how chess might bring people together, and how the need for internet for chess might drive support for wifi hotspots in what I am calling Vienna's 25th District and Vienna's 26th District, striving to bring those "districts" "digital equality" - which now that I write it, is interesting. Unlike some "equality" that we are fighting for, I think we can clearly measure digitial equality, and would be "that those who want it can have the same affordable and reliable access to the internet as we have in Vienna."
Pilot project ideas - A summer of chess ..
June to August - the summer holidays in Vienna - Indoor and Outdoor Chess
some ideas to consider
- A wifi enabled flohmarket stall, created and run by kids, with books and chess sets for sale, as well as a couple of games going on, locally and online ( A pop up chess shop in a shop - Volkshilfe - 2 locations come to mind ? )
- Large format chess in the parks and town squares
- Chess sessions in cafes and Schanigartens, plus the Vienna City Library, and also perhaps in the park summer betreuung programs run in 160 parks in Vienna ( as seen recently in Erlachplatz in the Favoriten Supergraetzl. )
